CASE STUDY

H&M – Safe Access Platforms & Step Overs

Location: H&M distribution depot, Milton Keynes

Sector: Intralogistics

Products: Safe access platforms, step overs, modular access systems

The challenge

Operating a vast 73,000m² distribution centre that supports returns, online dispatches, and regional fulfilment across the UK and Ireland brings significant operational pressure – and with it, complex access challenges.

At H&M’s Milton Keynes distribution depot, operatives were regularly navigating around large conveyor systems which made their access routes challenging. In some areas, personnel were having to walk around the conveyors, which added extra time to their routine tasks.

But the challenge didn’t stop there. Double-stacked conveyor systems created further complications, particularly when their maintenance teams needed to access critical components such as switch motors that were positioned at height. Every time the team needed to access this equipment, they had to put up temporary scaffolding – which led to costly downtime and disruption across the facility.

H&M needed a solution that would keep their personnel safe and remove reliance on temporary access methods. Enter our KOMBI modular access systems.

Our solution

We worked closely with the H&M team to design and supply a tailored safe access platform system that addressed each of these challenges head-on.

At the core of our solution was a 6-metre permanent fixed access platform, which provides safe and stable access to elevated maintenance points on-site. The structure is designed for 24/7 use, allowing operatives to reach critical equipment quickly and safely, without needing to install scaffolding every time access is required.

To further improve movement across the site, we also supplied a series of bespoke step overs, including solutions for both low-level and double-stacked conveyor systems. These step overs are designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing layout, enabling safe crossing points that align with their day-to-day operational flow.

As with all Katt Safety systems, we delivered a solution that was fit for purpose, easy to install, and built for long-term operational use. All products were designed, manufactured, and dispatched within a matter of days, which we were able to accelerate due to the needs of this project. This is much quicker than traditional fabrication methods, which could take several weeks or even months to turn around.

The outcome

The introduction of our permanent safe access platforms and step overs has completely transformed how H&M’s Milton Keynes site operates.

By eliminating the need for temporary scaffolding, H&M’s maintenance teams now have 24/7 safe access to critical areas, which has helped to significantly reduce downtime and improve their response times. The clearly defined crossing points have also removed the need to step over conveyors.

Our solution has helped to create a much safer and more efficient working environment for everyone involved. The flexibility of the system will also allow H&M to adapt to changing operational demands without compromising the safety of its personnel, which is a key consideration in busy intralogistics centres.

Edward Poon, MHE Logistics Manager: “Katt Safety remains my number one choice to ensure the environment is fit for purpose, resilient, and designed with real operational needs in mind. From initial consultation to final installation, they continue to demonstrate reliability, quality, and a strong commitment to safety excellence.”
