Working at height is one of the most dangerous activities in the workplace. In fact, falls from height are the number one cause of fatal injuries, according to the HSE. Many of these incidents start with something as simple as a slip on a wet or unstable surface, which could be avoided if the right precautions are put in place.
At Katt Safety, we believe that safe access starts underfoot, which is why we designed our anti-slip walkways to help your employees get grip before they slip. Discover what makes our roof access walkways the ideal all-weather safety solution below.
Why non-slip roof walkway systems are so important
Every time one of your workers steps onto a roof, they’re exposed to a huge range of potential hazards. These could include:
- Fragile roof materials
- Trip risks
- Sudden changes in level
- Poor weather conditions (rain, ice or high winds)
- Obstructed or unclear access routes
But one of the most underestimated dangers is slipping.
Rain, moss, ice, dirt, and general roof debris can all make roof surfaces slick – and if your maintenance staff or contractors don’t have a designated walkway in place, they will be left to navigate uneven routes that could cause serious accidents or injuries. This risk could be avoided altogether with one of our safe roof walk systems…
Discover our industry-leading roof access walkways
Our walkway systems provide safe access routes for workers operating on rooftops. They have been specifically engineered with maximum safety and durability in mind, helping to protect your personnel from injury and give them a clear route when conducting work at height.
Our primary PACE® fixed walkway system is manufactured from marine-grade aluminium with anti-slip grating. It fixes to standing seam roofs and R panel roof systems, and can also be mounted on membrane and built-up roof systems. It’s available in both standard and levelled configurations to suit your needs, with optional single or double guardrails for additional protection.
We also offer a loose-lay Crossgrip™ rooftop walkway system, which is ideal for flat roof applications. It’s made from slip-resistant PVC and is able to withstand wind speeds of up to 60mph, making it suitable for use in all weathers. It’s supplied in 10m rolls and can be easily installed in a matter of seconds using simple cable ties, helping to protect the integrity of your roof membrane.
Both systems are fully compliant with BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016, BS 4592, and BS EN 516. So, when you invest in one of our anti-slip walkway systems, you can rest assured that your personnel will be fully protected from accident or injury when working at height.
Our anti-slip walkways in action at Tesco Extra, Eastville
Tesco Extra in Eastville, Bristol recently called on us to provide a safer, more durable walkway system. Their existing system was installed on a delicate standing seam roof, so they needed to improve safety for their rooftop maintenance staff while also protecting the roof structure from additional damage.
We proposed our GW6 aluminium walkway system as the ideal solution. It’s a lightweight, non-slip system with double guardrails, making it perfect for fragile roof structures. Our certified installer Altus Safety carried out the installation, and we offered full design and technical support throughout the project.
This low-maintenance roof access walkway system helped to significantly improve rooftop safety for Tesco’s maintenance team, and they couldn’t be happier with the results. You can watch the full case study video for more information.
